Following the success of the first Young Leaders Camp, held in 2008, UKA and England Athletics are again working with England Netball, English Gymnastics and Rugby Football Union to offer two hundred 16-19 year olds the opportunity to attend a four day residential camp, where they will get the chance to develop their leadership and volunteering skills alongside likeminded individuals. For those of you who remember the 2008 YLC, the event was a huge success, with 40 young leaders benefitting from the experience.

What is the Leaders Camp?

The camp is taking place at Rugby School in Warwickshire, and will run from Monday 10th August - Thursday 13th August 2009. Whilst at the camp, the young people will focus upon the development of leadership skills through sport, whilst participating in a range of practical and theory based sessions. This is a key aspect of the volunteer development strategy for athletics, and builds upon a model that many other sports are now looking to follow.

The event will be run by professional staff from the four sports, with a programme that offers a range of workshops including club management, sports psychology, activity leadership, officiating, coaching & event management. There will also be time built in for relaxation and evening social activities, coordinated by trained staff.

Athletics is offering 50 of our most dedicated young volunteers from across the UK, the opportunity to attend the Camp completely FREE of charge (including all accommodation, workshops and meals). Attendees are required to transport themselves to the camp, however there may be the opportunity to share transport with others. If it is felt appropriate, Clubs or Athletics Networks can make a contribution towards travelling costs.

Who will be attending?

To be eligible, the leaders will ideally meet the following criteria:

- 16-19 yrs old at the time of the camp

- Actively volunteering in athletics within a club, school or college

- Have obtained a Coaching or Officiating award
- Enthusiastic, motivated and committed to developing their skills and experience

Unfortunately, to ensure the maximum impact of the event, we are unable to accept applications from those people who attended in 2008.

What Next?

We are looking for young people involved in leadership and volunteering within your club, who you feel will benefit from attending. Once you have identified these young people, they will need to complete the application pack and return to me by the revised deadline of Monday 15th June.

If you could forward this to them as soon as possible, it will obviously allow them maximum time to complete it. Alternatively, it may be more appropriate to pass it out to your other contacts, in order that they can distribute.

Applicants will be notified of their success by Wednesday 24th June. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me

Summary

This is an excellent chance for the sport to recognise the achievements of young volunteers within athletics. I am sure you will recognise the benefits of such a programme. Work is ongoing to develop additional exit routes for the leaders, including Leaders Academies, which are being piloted in selected areas of the UK, This is a fantastic opportunity, and one that we are really keen to promote to young people within your club. As such, any help you can offer in raising the profile of this event is greatly appreciated.

I hope this is of use. If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me on the numbers below.

Kind regards

Stretching

Tip of the month:

Don’t forget to build a foundation to your training. Speed work without a firm base of steady running is like trying to ice a cake without the sponge!!

Goal Setting:

It is important that your training has a clear purpose. If you have a clear goal in mind, this will improve your motivation to train over the winter. The goal should be one that you have set yourself, perhaps in conjunction with your coach. It should be stretching but realistic. It is often a good idea to have shorter term goals on the way to your main goal – if the main goal is too far away then it might there is a risk that you will think you have lots of time to prepare and slacken off accordingly!

If you are not sure what you should be aiming for, have a chat with Graham or Chris, who will try to give you a few pointers. However, remember they are YOUR goals so you need to “own” them.

Use this sheet to record your aims:

My main aim in 2007 is:

My main goal before Christmas is:

My main aim before Easter is:
