Cannell at the Double
The form book
went completely out the window at this years Isle of Man Cross
Country Championships held at the Crossags farm complex just outside
Ramsey.
On paper the
overall Champion would be Paul Sheard from the Pudsey & Bramley
Athletic Club eligible to run on the nine months residency rule with
Paul Clarke second and last years Champion Andy Cannell third, but
no Cannell was not going to give up his title without a fight, and
what a fight he put up. Pushed all the way by late entry Gianni
Epifani he put on an excellent display of front running to be
recrowned Champion, Epifani was just under 30 seconds behind in
runners up spot with Clarke third and Sheard fourth, Clarke had the
consolation of winning the over 40s category, as did Murray Lambden
fifth overall but first in the over 45s class. Dave Newton added to
his many Cross Country titles by winning the over 50s class and
Thomas Davies did likewise in the Junior Mens class.
There were more
shocks to follow in the junior events, Rachael Franklin has been
outstanding all season on and off the Island, but today she only
just grabbed the silver medal off Chanice Doyle in the last 50
metres to be well and truly beaten by Gemma Aston who had an
outstanding run to win the under 13 girls title, Astins younger
sister Sarah made it a family double by winning the under 11 girls
title with Emily Ashe second and Caitriona Cox third.
The shocks
continued in the under 9 boys, this was won by newcomer Nick White
from the Buchan school, championship favourite Joe Callaghan was
second with another newcomer from the Buchan school Mathew Lamb
third, again in the under 11 boys newcomer Oliver Lockley also from
the Buchan School took the under 11 boys title from Jack Garrett
with George Rawlinson third, (I was not too surprised about young
Lockley when you think his mum was a Great Britain International
athlete and father David is still one of the fastest men ever to run
from Peel to Douglas)
Some normality
was returned by Jordan Cain he won the under 13 boys race with
Richard Seed second and Sam Black third, these Manx Harriers team
mates along with Jack Callaghan won the team award.
Another shock
was on the cards in the under 15 boys with newcomer Bobby Kneale
from Castle Rushen, he was well on his way to victory, but
unfortunately took a wrong turn and ended up doing another full lap
before officials could turn him back, Kneale was so upset that he
went straight home before officials could talk to him, it is hoped
that Kneale will turn out again as the sport needs young athletes
with such outstanding talent. The gold medal was presented to
pre-race favourite Ryan Fairclough with Jack Leece taking the
silver. The under 9 girls went as per the form book with another win
for Alice Ashe adding the Championship title to her Manx Gas Cross
Challenge League title runner up was Alexandra Ross with Sosanna Cox
third.
There was no
problem for this seasons most impressive young Cross Country talent
Nicola Cooil from Castletown, Cooil had nearly ninety seconds to
spare over local junior tennis star Katie Tinkler, third was
sprinter Harriet Pryke gauging her fitness before the start of the
track season. The Ladies race also went to form with the Cal
Partington winning comfortably from Sarah Nelson second and Wendy
Ross third.
Still time for
one more little shock and that came in the under 17 boys race, I say
little because it has been coming all season Andy Newton and Lee
Butterworth have been seconds apart in every race they have taken
part in with Newton always coming out on top, but not today,
Butterworth moved past and then pulled away from Newton to win his
first Cross Country title with just 17 seconds to spare over Newton
with James Eccles third.
Neil Cowley won
the short course race with Rory Murphy second and weatherman Adrian
Cowin third; Gail Musson was the first lady finisher.
Our thanks must
go to all the Officials on the day, especially to Nigel Chaplin from
the Open Gate Trust who presented all the medals during the day and
for his continuing support of local athletics especially in the
Ramsey area.
